Labuan Bajo (Part. 2) – Kelor, Rinca and Kalong Island
08/11/2019/
Good morning from Labuan Bajo!
Labuan Bajo Harbour
Today we would meet the blue sky and the blue ocean all day. What a happy day! 😀 It was 8 a.m., and we would get on board towards Kelor Island. In our local boat, there were two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a kitchen where the boat’s crew cooked lunch for us. They served us with complete facilities so, don’t forget to keep the boat clean 🙂
Before we arrived on Kelor Island, we could prepare our sunglasses, hats and applied some sunblock because it was so hot here. The sun shone brightly, and there were only a few trees here, so you could imagine how hot was this place!
Extreme trekking paths on Kelor Island
From a distance, we saw several people on the extreme trekking paths that looked so small. Although I was afraid, I still tried to trek but not too high. If you don’t want to trek, you can take a rest while drinking young coconuts or buying souvenirs such as komodo carvings and pearls. Our guide said that they learned the carving technique in Bali, so their sculptures have a beautiful shape.
Indonesia’s native dragon on Rinca Island
We went back to our boat and sail to Rinca Island. After having enjoyed lunch, we arrived at Loh Buaya National Park. At first, we must meet the rangers that will guide, explain about Komodos, and keep us from Komodos’ attack.
According to our rangers, Komodos bite their prey and let them die slowly because their saliva contains a lot of bacteria. Don’t forget to keep a distance from them and walk in a group. Komodos would be hard to be recognized because they look like stones or woods.
There are several tracks to explore this place. They are long track, mid-track, and short track. We chose the short track because we never did exercise, so this short track was exhausting us enough. In the middle of the track, we saw some holes on the ground and that was Komodo’s nest. Those holes are for deceiving their enemy. Komodos are cannibal animals that can prey their cubs. So, their cubs will protect themselves by climbing the tree. So scary!
Although it has a lot of beautiful scenery, this place has dry soil and a lack of water because the rainy season only occurs in December to February. Don’t forget to save the water when you visit there 🙂 . After about an hour, we reached the top and once again met with the beautiful scenery that couldn’t be described in words.
It's so beautiful 🙂
Sunset with a group of bats
Next, we went to Kalong Island. We will see thousands of bats that is called “Kalong”, fly out decorating the sunset sky. Actually, we had snorkeling time on Pempe Island, but it was canceled due to a big wave. During the waiting time, I tried to sleep, but the boat kept swaying and it made me dizzy 😀
When the sun started to set, and the sky was darker, thousands of bats started flying one by one until they covered the sky. It was too beautiful! This was an unforgettable experience in the middle of the sea with thousands of bats and the magnificent sunset sky. Perfect! 🙂
From the harbor, we went towards Wisata Kuliner Kampung Ujung for having dinner. This place opens at night and sells various kinds of fresh fishes that would be cooked according to your taste. I really enjoyed their “ikan kuah asam” (sour fish soup) that was fresh and very delicious (miss it 😀 ). We went back to the hotel after getting full and got ready for tomorrow! 😀 (JUNE 2019)
